Expert Library Help for Teaching, Learning, and Research
Dear UCLA Teaching Community:
As the spring quarter commences, I invite you to take advantage of the following resources and services designed by UCLA Library to facilitate your work.
Teaching & Learning Services
Library staff provide instruction that guides students through all stages of the research process and introduces them to the breadth of Library services. Contact a subject librarian to incorporate discipline-specific instruction into your course through tailored synchronous or asynchronous instruction, syllabus and assignment design, or workshops. Alternatively, you can also:
- Review available services to support instructors, including instructional consultations
- Submit a general request for instruction, including Library Special Collections instruction requests, and you will be matched with an appropriate librarian
- Request a workshop
- Meet with a Library Data Science Center expert for foundational coding and data science skills instruction
- Review asynchronous workshops, tutorials, and guides from the Writing Instruction and Research Education (WI+RE) team, including Navigating UC Library Search, Setting Academic Goals, Primary Source Analysis, Positionality and Research, and more!
Research Services
- The UCLA Library can support your research needs wherever you are:
- Chat with a librarian 24/7
- Schedule an in-person or virtual research consultation
- Connect directly with your subject librarian, research data service, or a copyright/publishing expert
- Meet with a Library Data Science expert for data and computationally intensive research guidance
- Use Library Contact to email a staff member, library, or department
Bookmark our research help services on the UCLA Library website.
Access to Collections
The Library offers collections that support research and instruction:
- Submit requests for course reserves
- Subject librarians are available to consult with faculty to help identify possible alternative material such as eBooks for course reserves
- Request a purchase of materials, including print and electronic books
- Apply to our Affordable Course Materials Initiative, incentivizing the use of low-cost or free alternatives to expensive course materials
UC Library Search
You can use UC Library Search to locate and borrow millions of print and online books, journal articles, and other content. If you or your students need help using UC Library Search, please use our helpful guide, video tutorial, schedule a consultation with a librarian, or request an instruction session for your class.
CLICC - Campus Library Instructional Computing Commons
CLICC offers long-term and walk-up short-term laptop and equipment lending. UCLA faculty, students and staff may access a variety of specialized software on any computer with Internet access via the CLICC Virtual Desktop. A variety of drop-in study spaces with seating, power receptacles, and eduroam WiFi are also available via self-service reservation while Library buildings are open.
If you have comments or questions as you prepare for instruction this quarter, please contact RequestInstruction@library.ucla.edu.
