Requesting Duplication of LSC Materials

How to Place a Duplication Request

LSC has launched a new eDelivery service that provides limited reference-quality PDFs at no cost to remote users. To place an LSC eDelivery request, please email LSC staff at spec-coll@library.ucla.edu. Please see our FAQ for more information.

LSC also offers a fee-based service to provide high-resolution scanning services and AV digitization for researchers. To place an order for either of these services, please use your LSC User Account. Here are instructions for creating an account and submitting a request.

  1. Go to https://speccoll.library.ucla.edu.
  2. There are two options for signing into the registration and request system, and it is based on your affiliation with UCLA .
    • 2.1.  Current UCLA students, faculty, and staff should click on the left button to log in with your UCLA logon ID and selected authentication method. Complete the registration form.
    • 2.2.  If you are not currently a UCLA student, faculty, or staff, click the button on the right.  This will lead to the Aeon Login page. New users should click “First Time User? Create an account” link near the bottom of the page and complete the registration form.
  3. Click “UCLA Library Catalog” in the yellow menu bar.
  4. Find the catalog record for the book or collection from which you wish to request copies and click the “Request material” button to bring up a request page. (Note: for a more detailed description of how to locate an archival collection in the catalog, as well as how to find the “Request material” button for a specific box from that collection, please see: Requesting LSC Archival Materials Described in the Online Archive of California.)
  5. Click the “Switch to Photoduplication Form” button.
  6. Fill out the form. Please be sure to include any relevant information we need to know to correctly process your request.
  7. Click “Submit Request."

Limits have been established to ensure the preservation of the materials (see "Service Fees" below). Duplication requests are accepted pending review by public services staff. Approved requests are processed in the order received.

If you would like more information, or if you have questions about how to  request a copy of LSC materials in the Digital Library, please contact us at speccoll-duplication@library.ucla.edu.

Library Special Collections Duplication Policy

Patrons may not publish, post to the Internet, or otherwise distribute copies of any special collections holdings that fall under U.S. Copyright law without appropriate permission. Provision of copies of LSC holdings does not in any way imply permission to utilize materials for reasons other than personal research and scholarly use. If an intended use will extend beyond personal research purposes and a patron wishes to publish or distribute copies of materials in LSC’s collections, please note the following:

  • The Library does not grant or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute material whose copyright it does not hold or material deemed to be in the public domain.
  • The majority of UCLA Library Special Collections materials are still within copyright.
  • It is the responsibility of the user to clear any intellectual property (copyright, trademark, patent), privacy, and publicity rights in the material prior to publication or distribution. Upon request, LSC will provide any rights contact information it holds, subject to the privacy needs of our donors.
  • UCLA Library Special Collections owns the copyright for only a portion of the materials it possesses.
  • The user must appropriately cite or credit the source of any materials in LSC collections. Our standard citation/credit line is: Library Special Collections, Charles E. Young Research Library, UCLA.

Please contact speccoll-duplication@library.ucla.edu if you wish to publish material under copyright of the University of California Regents to obtain a licensing agreement. We will issue licensing agreements for commercial and non-commercial uses. Licensing fees may apply.

If you wish to commercially publish material not under copyright of the University of California Regents, please contact speccoll-duplication@library.ucla.edu.

Copyright Notice
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

Service Fees

The UCLA Library charges fees for certain special collections services. Payment in full is required before orders can be delivered.

Access Images for Personal/Research Purposes

For researchers unable to visit Special Collections, our eDelivery program provides reference-quality PDFs of clearly identified materials. We can take photographs on your behalf for 30 minutes (~100 pages) and there is no charge for the service. For more in-depth research, we ask that you hire a proxy researcher. Please see our FAQ for more information.

For researchers who are able to visit Special Collections, you will be permitted to take unlimited access images in the reading room of collection materials without duplication or access restrictions. These images can only be used for personal or research purposes. LSC staff is able to provide PDF access images of certain collection materials without cost for those unable to image materials during their visit. This service is limited to a maximum of 100 pages.
