Babies

France, 2010

This beautifully produced documentary takes us to four countries—Mongolia, Japan, Namibia, the United States—where we’re introduced to four newborns just as they’re starting out in the world. Over their first year, we observe in intimate proximity but with little in the way of commentary as they grow and develop under the watchful eyes of their parents. Differences in their cultural and regional circumstances underscore how unique and precious each childhood is even as they share struggles and triumphs common to us all. You will become as fascinated with these bundles of joy as they appear to be with the world coming into view around them.

DCP, color, in English, Japanese and Mongolian with English subtitles, 79 min.
