Edna and Yu-Shan Han Collection and Endowment Fund 韓玉珊教授紀念基金

Yu-Shan Han was the first professor of Chinese history at UCLA. Born in Beijing, China, he earned his bachelor's degree from Yenching University in 1924 and his doctorate from Boston University in 1929. Upon his return to China in 1930, he married Edna Nona Quick, whom he had first met at Yenching. After working in the rural areas within China as part of the Mass Education Movement and then teaching history and government at St. John's University in Shanghai, he joined the faculty of the UCLA History Department in 1941 and continued to teach there until his retirement in 1966. Professor Han's teaching of Chinese history expanded beyond the traditional areas of political, social and economic life in China to include literature, philosophy and religion. His distinguished service as an educator and historian also extended beyond the university to the community at large. He served as president of the China Society for Southern California from 1945 to 1947, served on the panel for the selection of history texts for the U.S. Armed Forces from 1953 to 1958, and served on the Council of International Visitors and Sister Cities in the Los Angeles Mayor's Office from 1962 to 1973.

The UCLA Library has been significantly enriched by the gift of Professor Han's personal library of books and documents, including items now scarce or impossible to find elsewhere. Among the gems in the collection are nearly five hundred original examination papers of imperial civil service candidates from the Ch'ing dynasty (1644–1912); a complete set of printing blocks for the Diamond Sutra; a set of 24 manuscript patents, or edicts, in Manchu or Chinese; and a 1775 Japanese reprint, in 24 large volumes, of the early Chinese medical work Cheng-lei pen-ts'ao or Classified Herbal. In memory of Professor and Mrs. Han, the Edna and Yu-Shan Han Collection and Endowment Fund was established to help preserve, supplement and provide access to this outstanding collection of unique materials for the benefit of future generations of scholars.

韓玉珊是加州大學洛杉磯分校中國歷史學的第一位教授。他出生於中國北京，1924年獲燕京大學學士學位，1929年獲波士頓大學博士學位。1930年返回中國，並與在燕京大學初識的Edna Nona Quick喜結連理。作為當時“平民教育運動”的一員，他曾在中國農村地區工作，隨后在上海聖約翰大學講授歷史學與政治學。1941年，他受聘於加州大學洛杉磯分校歷史系，並在此任教直至1966年榮休。
