Dear Friends of UCLA Library,
Since I rejoined UCLA as university librarian, I have worked regularly with nearly 50 senior leaders across campus who, like me, are deeply invested in UCLA’s world-class research, teaching and health mission.
Some of these colleagues attended this year’s Celebration of the Powell Society—our annual thank-you event for donors—where I shared how partnerships are essential to the Library’s work. These included Adriana Galván, dean and vice provost of undergraduate education; Brian Kite, dean and vice provost of graduate education; Erin Sanders O’Leary, vice provost for teaching and learning, and Steven M. Dubinett, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine.
These four academic leaders, and the students and faculty they serve, are essential stakeholders in the Library’s work of building, collecting, connecting and distributing knowledge. Our world-class collections are central to the Library’s mission, and our strategy for building and maintaining these collections is driven by the research enterprise and the curriculum.
If there is a topic people can research, build a curriculum around, or develop an understanding of, the Library builds collections to make this possible. From the latest online journal demonstrating groundbreaking research to unique materials from antiquity—these resources are accessible and available onsite, online or both.
The Library’s work is built from the services and expertise we provide via our collections—connecting users to their research, creative efforts and learning needs. We do this by enabling discoverability of our collections and supporting teaching, learning, innovative research and creative activities.
Your investment in the Library makes this possible. Every time I engage with a donor, fellow dean, member of faculty, or student, I know our work is interconnected. Your support is an essential component of producing the next generation of leaders, healers and creators. Thanks for your partnership.
Best regards,
Athena N. Jackson
