A double-crossing thief (Edmund Purdom) abandons both his partner (Trevor Howard) and his girlfriend Gianna (Dorothy Dandridge) after a robbery. The abandoned duo trail him from London to Spain, and fall for each other along the journey. The race and background of Dandridge’s character is never explicitly stated, which was a frustration to Dandridge, but led to her creating a role of great depth, sadness and mystery.

The Decks Ran Red

This low-budget MGM movie by the interesting director Andrew L. Stone (who usually made independent films with his wife, Virginia L. Stone) is about a mutiny plot on a ship headed by a new captain (James Mason). The cook’s wife (Dorothy Dandridge) is the only woman on board, and is dangerously lusted after by many of the men. Dandridge and Mason became close friends while working on the film.
