What is Research Impact?
Defining research impact can be challenging, since it often depends on one’s values and goals. The Economic and Social Research Council from UKRI(opens in a new tab) defines research impact broadly as “the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy.” We can also include academic impact in this definition, which can help us understand the reach of scholarly works and how they have influenced research across different academic fields.
Using research metrics and related tools can help you:
- Add value to tenure and promotion portfolios
- Demonstrate impact in grant applications
- Find collaborators in your field
- Discover how your work is being used
UCLA Library Services
The UCLA Library provides education, consultations and project support to help individuals and groups communicate their research impact by:
- Selecting relevant metrics, creating visualizations and incorporating other methods for communicating research impact to different audiences

- Describing the limitations of metrics and how to use them responsibly
