More Information
About the Closure
Beginning November 7, 2022, the Powell Library Reading Room will be closed for construction to improve seismic resilience. The closure is expect to last 14–16 months.
The East Rotunda will also be closed, and restroom upgrades will be occurring at the same time. These will take place on the Ground Floor and 2nd Floor of Powell Library. Please note that areas located near these spaces may be impacted by construction noise.
As part of UCLA’s Seismic Safety Review(opens in a new tab) process, UCLA identified the need for structural work across campus, including in the Powell Library’s Reading Room. Steel beams are being placed in the ceiling behind the decorative tiles. When the work is completed, it will be invisible to visitors and will not affect the historical aspects of the building. UCLA Library will publish periodic construction updates on the website and across Library social media accounts.
Accessing Resources During the Closure
- Books and other volumes: Many materials have been moved to Powell 145 (CLICC Lab). Please visit the Library Catalog (UC Library Search)(opens in a new tab) to find information about specific titles.
- Study spaces: In Powell Library, visitors will continue to have access to study areas and services located on all floors. Some may be impacted more than others by construction noise and activity. The Library also encourages visitors to explore services and study spaces offered at seven other Library locations.
Events During the Closure
It is possible there may be small events held in Powell Library during this time. However, our priority is to support access to materials typically found in the Reading Room and to do everything possible to minimize the impact of the construction on Library visitors. To host an event in Powell, please see our event and exhibitions request page.
