About the Closure

The Powell Library Reading Room is closed for construction to improve seismic resilience. We expect to reopen the Reading Room in the fall quarter 2024.

The East Rotunda is also closed, and restroom upgrades will be occurring at the same time. These upgrades are taking place on the ground floor and 2nd floor of Powell Library. Please note that areas located near these spaces may be impacted by construction noise.

As part of UCLA’s Seismic Safety Review(opens in a new tab) process, UCLA identified the need for structural work across campus, including in the Powell Library’s Reading Room. Steel beams are being placed in the ceiling behind the decorative tiles. When the work is completed, it will be invisible to visitors and will not affect the historical aspects of the building. UCLA Library will publish periodic construction updates on the website and across Library social media accounts.

Accessing Resources During the Closure

  • Books and other volumes: Many items have been moved to the CLICC Lab in Powell 145. Please visit UC Library Search(opens in a new tab) for information about specific titles.
  • Study spaces: Visitors can still access study areas and services on all floors of Powell Library. Some areas may be impacted by construction noise. During this time, the Library encourages visitors to explore the seven other Library locations as well.

Events During the Closure

There may be small events held in Powell Library during this time. However, our priority is to support access to items typically found in the Reading Room and minimize the impact of the construction on Library visitors. To host an event in Powell, please see our event and exhibitions request page.
