Intimacies

Year: 2012 Country: Japan Language: Japanese with English subtitles Runtime: 255 min. Digital. Color

Born out of a workshop with acting students from Tokyo’s film school ENBU, Intimacies itself follows a group of students rehearsing and then staging a play. At four hours, it’s Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s earliest exploration of duration as a cinematic device with the first half focused on the group’s preparations and the second, aside from a brief, poignant coda, a presentation of the complete play. Personal problems and current events threaten to derail the project with director Reiko (Rei Hirano) adjusting and revising to keep the play and her relationship with the playwright, Ryo (Ryo Sato), on track.—Senior Public Programmer Paul Malcolm

Director/Screenwriter: Ryusuke Hamaguchi. With: Rei Hirano, Ryo Sato, Mikio Tayama.
