Before Sunrise

U.S., 1995

Much of Richard Linklater’s work deals with time: nostalgia of a certain time (Slackers, Dazed and Confused), the literal time of growing up (Boyhood), dream time (Waking Life), and then there is the constraints of time, as explored in his Before Trilogy. Before Sunrise is the first in this triptych that captures the thrill of romantic possibility while up against an encroaching departure. When Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meet on a train to Vienna, they get off together and spend the day talking and walking the city before Jesse must leave in the morning. Together they form an intoxicating bond that feels bittersweet as time’s inexorable passage works against them.
