Made possible by a gift from Herbert Klein

Malibu author Herbert Klein was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction whose works and interests ranged widely, from art history to surfing to bioluminescence to the elusive twentieth-century German writer B. Traven. Mr. Klein bequeathed his own book collection, his personal papers and an unrestricted gift to UCLA Library Special Collections in 1990. As its first priority, income from this fund is used to fund cataloging of the Klein Collection; in future years it will be applied toward acquisitions and preservation of the department's collections and its publication program. Mr. Klein's bequest came about as a result of the close relationship he developed with librarians in the department. This relationship began when the department acquired a portrait of his wife and occasional collaborator, Mine Cooper Klein, as part of a large collection of Edward Weston's photographs.
