Welcome Jessii Chun, Assistant Technical Writer
Have questions about your research?
We can help!
Let's give a warm welcome to Jessii Chun, the new Assistant Technical Writer at UCLA Library's Data Science Center (DSC). Currently, Jessii is a Master's student studying Data Science Engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.
What goals do you have for this year as DSC's new Assistant Technical Writer?
My goal this year is to help create a more interactive atmosphere within the DSC. I think it is important that people are aware of all the resources that are available at UCLA. To do that, I want to engage more people throug the use of social media, blog posts, and newsletters! The first thing that I want to tackle is the DSC blog. I want to start posting regularly about current events, research at UCLA, and DSC workshops and outreach.
How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?
While attending UCLA as an undergraduate, I worked for the Center of Excellence for Engineering and Diversity (CEED) as their Social Media Coordinator. In that position, I learned the importance of social media presence and its impact on student engagement. I want to use my experience from that position and apply what I learned at the DSC.
What is one thing that you learned about yourself during the COVID-19 quarantine?
During this "almost year" of self isolation, I have learned more about myself in a lot of different ways. One thing that I learned is that I cannot stand being bored. I thrive on remaining mentally alert and active, and since I have been quarantining, much of the "normal" ways of socializing are no longer doable. I found new ways to entertain myself! Like many, I became a proud pet parent (1 cat, 5 tetras, 4 snails, 1 betta, and MORE). I've been investing in my health, learning how to cook delicious meals and trying new recipes! I have also been staying involved in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter at UCLA.
Do you have any New Year's resolutions?
This year, I wanted to read more! My goal is to read one self-help book every month, ranging in topics such as financial wellness and healthy habits. The first book--the January book--is called The Big Life by Ann Shockett.
This is my cat Millie Miso. I adopted her in August 2020. This is the book that I am currently reading!
What are your hobbies?
For fun, I like to snowboard! I am also very into art. One day, I want to have a small clothing company where I embroider my art on thrifted clothes.
What are your pronouns?
My pronouns are she/her/hers.
