His groundbreaking work in television began with directing the PBS public affairs and documentary series \u003Cem>Say Brother\u003C/em> and \u003Cem>Black Journal\u003C/em>, which were produced to give voice to Black communities following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Later summoned by Redd Foxx to work on \u003Cem>Sanford and Son\u003C/em> as one of the few Black directors in primetime television, Lathan went on to helm episodes for a wide range of hit series, from \u003Cem>Hill Street Blues\u003C/em> to \u003Cem>Roc\u003C/em>. A formidable talent, he also directed numerous pilots that launched highly successful series, including \u003Cem>Amen\u003C/em> and \u003Cem>Moesha\u003C/em>.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">In a career of milestones, following his theatrical feature \u003Cem>Beat Street\u003C/em> (1984), Lathan partnered with Russell Simmons to create \u003Cem>Def Comedy Jam\u003C/em> and \u003Cem>Def Poetry Jam\u003C/em> for HBO, the latter garnering the duo a Peabody Award. Among multiple Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards and too many other major awards to mention, Lathan was recognized with a CINE Golden Eagle and an American Film Festival Blue Ribbon for directing the \u003Cem>American Playhouse\u003C/em> telefilm \u003Cem>Go Tell It on the Mountain\u003C/em> (1985).
