Overdue Charges
If material or equipment is not returned on time, either a fine or replacement bill may be issued. The Library sends an overdue notice as a courtesy but is not responsible for its receipt; users are responsible for managing their own materials. Fines are assessed by the physical piece for all days on which the lending library is open. Fines are charged on the following materials:
Short-Term Reserve Material (two hours, overnight) | $5 per hour for every hour the lending library is open, up to a maximum of $50 per item |
Recalled materials and Long-Term Reserve Material (1-7 days) | $5 per day for every day the lending library is open, up to a maximum of $50 per item |
Replacement Charges
A replacement bill is issued when a user fails to return borrowed materials. Each bill includes a processing fee, a replacement charge for the item, and applicable fines, such as those for recalled materials. The replacement charge is the actual cost of the item or a standard price selected from the UCLA Library standard fee chart. The $50 processing fee is composed of two components: a $10 bill processing fee, which includes labor and supplies expenses incurred to issue the bill, handle user interactions, and process cancellations and payments; and a $40 material processing fee, which includes labor costs to order and process the item being replaced. The bill processing fee cannot be canceled; the material processing fee is canceled if the user returns the item before a replacement copy has been ordered. The entire $50 processing fee remains due for any item referred to a collection office.
Lost or Damaged Items
A user who reports that an item has been lost is responsible for the replacement charge and processing fee, and binding charge if applicable, plus any fines accumulated. Users may be assessed repair or replacement charges for damaged items. A user may replace a lost or damaged item with a copy acceptable to the library from which the item was borrowed. Users who want to supply a replacement copy should make arrangements with the appropriate library within thirty days of the replacement bill date. The user is responsible for $10 of the processing fee plus the cost of binding, if required.
Payment
At this time, bills for UCLA students can be viewed and paid by credit card or e-check using UCLA Library Payments Online. Log in using your UCLA Logon ID and password. Non-payment of bills will result in a hold placed on re-registration, graduation, or release of transcripts and referral to a collection office.
Charges for equipment, such as CLICC devices, will appear on BruinBill.
The Library is unable to issue a refund when an item is returned more than six months after a replacement fee has been paid.
