Overdue Charges
If material is not returned on time, either a fine or replacement bill may be issued. The Library sends an overdue notice as a courtesy but is not responsible for the receipt; users are responsible for managing their own materials.
Fines are assessed by the physical piece for all days on which the lending library is open.
The following fine charges apply to all Library materials:
Short-Term Reserve Material (two hours, overnight) | $5 per hour for every hour the lending library is open, up to a maximum of $50 per item |
Recalled materials and Long-Term Reserve Material (1-7 days) | $5 per hour for every day the lending library is open, up to a maximum of $50 per item |
All Other Material | $.50 per day for every day the lending library is open, up to a maximum of $10 per item |
A Library replacement bill is issued when a user fails to return borrowed materials. Each bill includes a replacement processing fee, a replacement charge for the item, and applicable fines. The replacement charge is the actual cost of the item or a standard price selected from the UCLA Library standard fee chart. The $50 replacement processing fee is comprised of two components: a $10 billing processing fee, which includes labor and supplies expenses incurred to issue the bill, handle user interactions, and process cancellations and payments; and a $40 materials processing fee, which includes labor costs to order and process the item being replaced. The billing processing fee generally cannot be canceled; the material processing fee is canceled if the user returns the item before a replacement copy has been ordered. The entire $50 processing fee remains due for any item referred to a collection office.
Lost or Damaged Items
A user who reports that an item has been lost is responsible for the replacement charge and processing fee, any fines that may have accrued, and binding charge if applicable. Users may be assessed repair or replacement charges for damaged items.
A user may replace a lost or damaged item with a copy acceptable to the library from which the item was borrowed. Users who want to supply a replacement copy should make arrangements with the appropriate library within thirty days of the replacement bill date. The user is responsible for $10 of the processing fee plus the cost of binding, if required.
Payment
Bills for UCLA faculty, staff, Extension, and external users can be viewed and paid by credit card or e-check using UCLA Library Payments Online. UCLA faculty and staff log in using your UCLA Logon ID and password. Extension students and external patrons log in using the UCLA Logon ID and password provided by the library at the time of library account creation. Non-payment of bills may result in their referral to a collection office. Instructions for paying by mail via check or credit card are printed on bills. Bills can be paid by mail with a check or credit card.
The Library is unable to issue a refund when an item is returned more than six months after a replacement fee has been paid.
