Welcome Sharon Han and Eden Kinzel, National Library of Medicine Associate Fellows

Please join us in welcoming Sharon Han and Eden Kinzel as they complete the 2nd year of their National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellowship program at at UCLA Library. The NLM Associate Fellowship program is a postgraduate training experience whose first year is conducted in Bethesda, Maryland, at the National Library of Medicine and includes an optional second-year experience at a partnering institution. The program provides a broad experience in health sciences librarianship and prepares librarians for future leadership.

Our Associate Fellow colleagues are with us for one year and will be at the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, once it is safe to return to campus. Eden has joined the Sciences User Engagement team, focusing on general academic health sciences librarianship and engaging with the School of Medicine. Sharon has joined the Regional Medical Library, focusing on public health education and outreach. Both Eden and Sharon will be exploring the general academic library environment as well, and using skills gained over their academic and professional careers to support the UCLA Library.

We asked Sharon and Eden a few questions about themselves and their professional aspirations.

What goals do you have for this year as a 2nd year NLM Associate Fellow at UCLA Library?

Sharon: My goal for this position is to evaluate and address the information needs of public health professionals in the UCLA and Pacific Southwest community. As librarians play a part in addressing health, equity and environmental issues at the population level, I hope to better understand our served communities and collaborate with colleagues to address these multi-faceted problems. During our second year as a fellow, I also hope to gain more experience in areas such as data science, public health and outreach to continue my development as an early career librarian.

Eden: My biggest goal for the second year of my fellowship is to keep learning so that I'm better able to guide the students, faculty, staff or clinicians whom I will be collaborating with. I specifically want to focus on becoming a better expert searcher, developing more confidence and abilities as an instructor and gaining more experience with data analysis software.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?

Sharon: Before UCLA, I was at NLM as a 1st year Associate Fellow, managing and collaborating on projects related to information access, data sharing, citizen science and student engagement. Prior to the fellowship, I completed my MSLIS at the University of Illinois, where I served university and local communities through my work as a graduate assistant at the life sciences library and a community educator at a local makerspace.

Eden: During the first year of my fellowship at NLM, I led projects relating to MEDLINE indexing procedures, systematic reviews and LIS school collaborations. Previously, I completed an internship at a health sciences library where I participated in instruction, reference, consultations and literature searching. Before receiving my MLIS at Western University, I received my BSc from the University of Guelph where I majored in biomedical sciences and minored in molecular biology and genetics. I hope to take all of these experiences into my role at UCLA Library and build on them further.

What projects will you be tackling first?

Sharon: First, I need to better understand the current public health organizations NNLM PSR serves and identify any gaps we can address through outreach. I will also engage with our subawardees to ensure they have the support they need to accomplish their objectives.

Eden: I plan to first learn more about my colleagues as well as the population I'll be serving. I have already been added as the Departmental Liaison for Medicine as well as Clinical Medicine, so I'm excited to see what questions and request I'll be receiving there!

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to? What do you like to do outside of work?

Sharon: I am currently watching What We Do in the Shadows and reading Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi and The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. You can often find me these days learning to sew clothes and playing with my four-year-old corgi, Nugget.

Eden: I am currently rereading Ellen Hopkins' Love Lies Beneath, rewatching In the Dark and listening to the Sickboy podcast and any song by my favorite band The Maine. I enjoy going for walks, practicing yoga, baking and DIY-ing.
