Welcome Sandy Ma, Assistant Director of Library Business Services

Please join us in welcoming Sandy Ma to the UCLA Library! Sandy is our new assistant director of Library Business Services. In order to introduce you to our newest team member, we asked her a few questions:

What goals/hopes do you have for this year as our new assistant director?

As assistant director, my mission is to fully support our director Doris Wang in managing the day-to day accounting and business transactions of the Library and safeguarding the financial well-being of our organization.  My hope this year is to quickly learn, understand and acquaint myself with every financial transaction, process, financial system, and policy that impact our operations so I can help maintain the smooth work-flow of our day to day operations and to help identify challenges that we might face in the coming years and to strategize on how to meet and overcome these challenges.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?

For the past 20 years, I have been managing funds at the department level and my daily life and activities have revolved around fiscal responsibility and good stewardship of our funds.  It’s of paramount importance to have efficient and simple processes and procedures in place, which dictates how financial transactions are processed and reconciled, and to have effective internal controls to eliminate waste. This ensures accounting accuracy and compliance with university and sponsor policies.  I hope to bring my experience, knowledge and expertise gained at the department level to the organization level and be able to my contributions to the Library.

What things will you be tackling first?

I am very eager to dive in, and to get to know the ins-and-outs of all financial transactions and activities at the Library, and to get to know our team and colleagues.  I am so excited to join the Library business finance team and I want to be a contributing member.  Our team members have such strong core values and work ethic; I am energized to work amongst them.  I want to constantly examine our internal processes in order to streamline our workflow; to unburden our staff when possible and maximize use of our resources to support our operational needs.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to go hiking on the weekends, admiring the many variety of plants and if I’m lucky, catching a glimpse of a passing deer, snake, or mountain lion.  I’m not athletic at all but I do like to be with nature every chance I get.  I also join an occasional Zumba or dance class at the gym; they don’t feel like exercising but are just incredibly fun and I love it.
