Welcome Ashton Prigge, Junior Software Developer

The UCLA Library’s Digital Initiatives and Information Technology (DIIT) division recently welcomed Junior Software Developer and double Bruin alum Ashton Prigge ('15, MLIS '19) to its ranks. Get to know Ashton in this Q&A:

What goals/hopes do you have for this year as a junior software developer?
I’m looking forward to learning from our great team. I get to work on several teams all with very experienced members and I am sure I will learn quite a bit from all of them. I also look forward to building and improving digital library services for UCLA.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?
I just finished my MLIS degree at UCLA with a specialization in Informatics. My coursework focused on computer programming and various ways to work with data. I interned at both the Getty Research Institute and the UCLA Library as a student. I spent my Getty internship working on the Research Application Development Team where I assisted with user experience research and design. As a DIIT intern on the Software Development and Library Services Team, I worked with the legacy digital collections. I am lucky I’ll get to apply both my user experience and software development skills in my new position as a software developer.

What things will you be tackling first?
As a junior software developer, I’ll be working on a few projects. One is migrating content out of legacy Digital Library systems. This project will help to unify our collections as many of the older digital collections exist as individual sites. This migration will make finding materials easier for users! I will also be working on the development of a new travel request and reports application for Library staff. Finally, I am also working on the User Experience team to help improve the usability of Library software and projects.

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to? What do you like to do outside of work?
After work you can usually find me off to dinner with friends. We love trying new restaurants and there are so many popping up in Los Angeles. In my downtime I like to relax by listening to a mellow podcast such as Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Her show always is what convinces me to read or watch something new. I am looking forward to reading more now that I am out of school. Currently, I am reading Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends.
