While at Santa Cruz, Virginia Steel oversaw a $100 million expansion and renovation of the campus's largest library on campus. She also served on a number of systemwide committees, including the UC Council of University Librarians, which she currently chairs. Before taking the Santa Cruz position, Steel served as director of libraries at Washington State University, as associate director for public services at MIT, and in various positions at UC San Diego and Arizona State University.
