New Online Resources in the UCLA Science Libraries

The collection development team in the UCLA Science Libraries spent the summer voraciously adding to the online research portals offered to Bruin scholars. From authoritative guides to key subject areas, to educational engineering videos, toJoVE exam prep materials for health sciences students, we hope these resources contribute to your academic success during the 2018-19 academic year!

Below is a brief overview of these newly-acquired online collections.

Board Vitals
The UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library has access to BoardVitals, a high-quality, effective, and powerful exam review tool. Access its test bank to prepare for the USMLE Step 1, 2 and 3, Shelf Exams for seven medical specialties, NBDHE and NBDE I and II.

California Digital Library
Since 1997, the California Digital Library has partnered with libraries across the UC system to assemble one of the world’s largest digital research libraries and change the ways that faculty, students, and researchers discover and access information. Among the resources CDL rolled out over the summer are:

  • DynaMed Plus, a clinical reference tool written by a team of physicians and researchers who synthesize the evidence and provide objective analysis.
  • Enhanced Cochrane Library platform, including expanded search functionality across all content like Cochrane Reviews and Protocols, CENTRAL, Editorials, Special Collections, Cochrane Clinical Answers, and other systematic reviews from Epistemonikos
  • Unpaywall, a service that maintains a database of links to full-text articles from open-access sources all over the world.
  • has transitioned to Springer Nature Experiments has been designed to help users/researchers find and evaluate relevant protocols and methods

Embase is a biomedical literature database that provides essential biomedical evidence along with deep biomedical indexing and search forms to assist in building search strategies. PubMed users will want to check out Embase.

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets
This Journal is devoted to reporting advancements in the science and technology associated with spacecraft and tactical and strategic missile systems, including subsystems, applications, missions, environmental interactions, and space sciences.

JoVE Engineering Education Videos
JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) supports advancing research and science education by making and publishing videos of scientific experiments from the top laboratories around the globe, with closed captioning in nine languages. Scientists, educators and students can see the intricate details of cutting-edge experiments rather than read them in text articles. UCLA now has access to all Science Education videos, including the new Engineering collection, which teach scientific fundamentals through video demonstration.

Nature Journals
The Library has increased its access to materials from the Nature Publishing Group with subscriptions to four new journals:Nature Sustainability Journal

  • Nature Catalysis: Publishes work on homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, and biocatalysts, incorporating both fundamental and applied studies.
  • Nature Sustainability: Publishes research about how humankind can sustain life in a finite world
  • Nature Electronics: Publishes fundamental and applied research across all areas of electronics, incorporating the work of scientists, engineers and industry. At its core, the journal will be concerned with the development of new technologies and understanding the impact of these developments on society
  • Nature Disease Primers: A peer-reviewed medical journal publishing broad review articles about disease areas, offering a global overview of the field and outlining "key open research questions".

Oxford Bibliographies
Complementing existing research guides, the Library has added access to Oxford Bibliographies in ecology, environmental science, evolutionary biology and psychology. Combining the best features of an annotated bibliography and a high-level encyclopedia, this cutting-edge resource directs researchers to the best available scholarship across a wide variety of subjects.

Soft Robotics
Published bi-monthly, Soft Robotics (SoRo) is a top robotics journal, publishing world-class peer-reviewed research on the emerging technologies and developments of soft and deformable robots, including coverage of flexible electronics, materials science, computer science, and biomechanics.

Access to these resources can be found on any UCLA campus computer or, for UCLA users only, off-campus access through Bruin Online Proxy Server or the UCLA VPN Client.
