Meet Doug Daniels, Emerging Technologies Librarian

Please join us in congratulating Doug Daniels, who has transitioned into a new role as emerging technologies librarian with the UCLA Library's Data Science Center. We asked Doug a few questions about serving in this dynamic position.

What goals/hopes do you have for this year as our new emerging technologies librarian?Doug Daniels, Emerging Technologies Librarian
My goal is to continue to develop the Library's Lux Lab into a comprehensive suite of emerging technology services. Part of that goal is going to involve a lot of research and development into virtual reality technologies. I am interested not only in how to incorporate our existing services with VR, but also how effective VR is - in its current state - as a tool for research and pedagogy.

In the immediate future, my goal is to continue using whatever emerging technology resources we have at our disposal to help our frontline workers as they fight against the current pandemic. Whether we are aiding faculty around campus through rapid prototyping or helping to coordinate the efforts of our surrounding Los Angeles community, the UCLA Library is well-positioned to play an important role in this fight.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?
Prior to coming to UCLA, I worked several different tech-heavy jobs in the film industry, both production and post-production roles. Since that time, I have been fortunate enough to have had the flexibility here in the UCLA Library to build the Lux Lab into a suite of emerging technology services that best support research needs throughout the campus. I've also had the pleasure of working with a large variety of departments, both north and south campus. Now that I am nearing the completion of my MLIS studies, I feel as though I have a well-rounded perspective on how to grow an emerging technologies service within a world-class research Library.

What things will you be tackling first?
In this new role, I hope to first dedicate some time to learn what my colleagues in the Data Science Center do, and how best to support them in their work. As I develop ways to support the DSC team, I also want to continue my outreach across campus in the hopes of finding new and exciting projects to support. Beyond just UCLA, however, I look forward to becoming involved with various national and international groups and initiatives that are working to help define what is an emerging technologist, librarian or otherwise. I also look forward to participating in professional discussions with colleagues from around the world that are developing metadata standards for 3D data.

What are you currently reading and watching?
My wife and I are working our way through each other's favorite books, so right now I'm enjoying Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, albeit slowly while I finish up grad school! Together we enjoy watching One Piece.

We are delighted to have Doug remain with the Library in his new role. You can contact him at dougdaniels@library.ucla.edu.
