Letter from University Librarian, Ginny Steel- Fall 2016

Ginny Steel, University LibrarianDear Donors and Supporters of the UCLA Library,
I’m delighted to share exciting news about an accomplishment that wouldn’t have been possible without each and every one of you. The UCLA Library recently concluded our best year of fundraising since 2009: We raised a total of $8.65 million, which is 23% more than our goal of $7.2 million!
In previous issues of this newsletter, you’ve read about many of the major gifts that make up this sum, and we are deeply grateful to those visionary donors. But we also treasure the steadfast loyalty of friends like Marianne and Abdelmonem Afifi, profiled in this issue, whose generous giving year after year forms the bedrock of support for the Library’s programs and services to UCLA.
Our donors help the Library’s expert librarians and staff support undergraduate research, develop innovative digital projects, and build innovative international partnerships. You enable us to equip our spaces with the technology today’s researchers need to make discoveries as well as the comforts students crave as they cram for finals. Your contributions allow us to present public programs in which audiences find engagement and inspiration.
Our Centennial Campaign funding priorities span a variety of projects and amounts, from endowing librarian positions to enhancing collections to ensuring the Library’s spaces and technology evolve to meet the needs of our UCLA community. Gifts of all sizes impact students, scholars, and staff across campus and around the world.
Your generous contributions have carried the Library one-third of the way toward our total campaign goal of $52 million, and we ask for your continued support as we work to meet our goal by 2019. With your support, we can redefine the academic experience for the students of today and tomorrow. We can anticipate and respond to the diverse needs and activities of researchers developing new forms of knowledge. We can expand engagement opportunities to encompass broader publics both here at home and around the world.
Thank you for your commitment to a shared vision for our limitless future.
