Introducing Nicole Alvarado, Book and Paper Conservator

Nicole Alvarado recently joined UCLA Library’s Preservation & Conservation department as Book and Paper Conservator. We asked Nicole a few questions about herself and her aspirations for this position.Nicole Alvarado in purple shirt against Powell Library building

What goals/hopes do you have for this year as our new Book and Paper Conservator?
My main goal for this year is to treat books and flat work from the Preservation & Conservation department backlog so that researchers and professors can access the material for their studies. I also would like to help with furthering education wherever I can in providing handling trainings, workshops, and preservation education for other Library staff or students.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?
I graduated from SUNY Buffalo State with an M.A., C.A.S. in Art Conservation in 2020. I then went on to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's Margaret Herrick Library, where I held a yearlong Kress Conservation Fellowship; I worked on bound and flat objects that were to go on display at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. After my yearlong placement, I got an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in paper conservation at LACMA where I worked on works on paper and projects from their Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies, which is part of LACMA's library special collections.

What projects will you be tackling first?
First, I will be working on a backlog of books and projects primarily from UCLA Library Special Collections as well as checking in collection materials that have been returned from exhibition loans.

What are you currently watching? And what do you like to do outside of work?
I am currently watching A League of Their Own on Amazon. Outside of work, I enjoy bike riding, going to Knott's Berry Farm, and hanging out with my family.

What is your preferred name and what are your pronouns?
Nicole, (she/her)
