Introducing Fran Marineo, Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian

Francesca (Fran) Marineo recently joined the UCLA Library as humanities and social sciences librarian, a role in which she will also coordinate the Library’s student research assistants program. We asked Fran a few questions about herself and her aspirations for this position.Photo of Fran Marineo

What goals/hopes do you have for this year as our new humanities and social sciences librarian?
First off, I am just so happy to be back on campus! I received my MLIS from UCLA in 2015. I love the Bruin community, and I am thrilled to take on this new role as part of it.  My main goal for this year is to build relationships with my colleagues both within the Library and beyond. In this position, I will be working closely with the School of Education & Information Studies’ Department of Education, so I am very excited to get to know all of the students, faculty and staff with whom I will be working. I also hope to get involved in educational equity work on campus to support all students in their learning journeys through flexible and inclusive teaching.

How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at the UCLA Library?
Prior to the UCLA Library, I was the teaching and learning librarian for online education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the instructional design librarian at Nevada State College. In these positions, I collaborated with so many incredible campus colleagues to support students in a variety of disciplines, including education. Most recently, at UNLV, I worked closely with the Office of Online Education and the Faculty Center to design learning materials for students and workshops for instructors about how the libraries supports online teaching, learning and research. I also have an M.S. in educational psychology with research interests in motivational and inclusive teaching practices. I am excited to see how my knowledge and interests will evolve here at UCLA.

What projects will you be tackling first?
One of my first projects will simply be getting to know the Library, the Department of Education, and the broader campus. I love hearing students’ stories, learning about what brought them here and sharing experiences we’ve had both at UCLA and in our everyday lives. This way, I can ensure I support the whole student and connect with folks in more meaningful ways. This is especially important to my role as a coordinator of library student research assistants. I truly cannot wait to become immersed in the UCLA community and collaborate with folks on a whole handful of fun and interesting projects soon!

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to? What do you like to do outside of work?
My partner and I are currently binging the British comedy gameshow Taskmaster. It is silly and makes me laugh out loud constantly! We also just started rewatching all of Star Wars in chronological story order. When not watching TV, I love to spend time with my dog, Laszlo. He loves playing with other puppers at the dog park and chasing squirrels in the neighborhood. I am also an avid home baker. My favorite things to make are pies. I am planning on making a tiered pie for my wedding this fall!
