Collections

UCLA's Charles E. Young Research Library is a major research library containing more than three million items supporting research in the social sciences and humanities. Materials include books, journals, newspapers, microfilm, maps, archival collections, digital collections, and reference materials. Publications are collected in hundreds of languages to support area studies and international/global research. Search the UC Library Search for holdings in all formats.

The Research Library also houses the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library (Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-language materials) and UCLA Library Special Collections (rare books, manuscripts, historic photographs, University Archives, and other special materials).

Books

Three floors of open stacks allow for browsing and direct access to much of the collection, while the remainder is available for quick retrieval from the UC Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF), located just across campus.

Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers

In addition to online subscriptions, the Research Library has current print subscriptions to many periodicals, including academic journals and major world newspapers. Current journals and newspapers are shelved in the A-Level Garden Commons, along with microfilm archives of older newspapers. Older bound journals are shelved with books in the main stacks on the third to fifth floors.

Microform Collections

In addition to newspapers, the Research Library has extensive holdings of microfilm and microfiche. Major microform sets provide significant coverage of government documents, statistics, and historical archives.

Reference Collection

The Research Library's reference collection, housed in the first floor Reading Room, contains approximately 28,000 general and specialized volumes supporting research in the social sciences and humanities. Reference materials include encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, maps, biographies and biographical dictionaries, directories, bibliographies, census and government documents, and literary and newspaper indexes. Explore the library's many reference materials via the Reference Source research guide.

The UCLA Library is an official depository for documents produced by the US federal government, the California state government, municipalities in California, the United Nations, and the European Union. Depository libraries receive copies of government documents for free in exchange for providing public access to them.

Henry J. Bruman Map Collection

The Bruman Map Collection consists of maps and atlases, aerial photographs, gazetteers, place name literature, and specialized books and journals about cartography and geographic information systems. With geographic coverage from all over the globe, the collection is especially rich in materials relating to Los Angeles city and county, southern California, and the remainder of California. Contemporary sheet maps are available in the A-Level Garden Commons, while contemporary atlases are in the main Reference Reading Room on the first floor. A large collection of historic maps and atlases is available by appointment.
