FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Why is the Powell Library Reading Room closed temporarily?
The University of California voluntarily updated its seismic performance ratings of buildings across the UC system by incorporating new technologies, scientific advances, and best engineering practices that have emerged in the past several years. As part of UCLA’s Seismic Safety Review process, UCLA identified the need for structural work across campus, including in the Powell Library’s Reading Room. As a result, beginning November 7, 2022, the Reading Room will be closed for 14-16 months to improve seismic resilience by reinforcing the ceiling to meet updated seismic safety codes.
What specifically will be done? Will the construction affect the historical aspects of the building?
Steel beams are being placed in the ceiling, behind the decorative tiles. When the work is completed, it will be invisible to visitors and will not affect the historical aspects of the building.
How do I access the materials that used to be in the Reading Room?
Many materials have been moved to Powell 145 (CLICC Lab). Please visit the Library catalog to find information about specific titles.
What other areas of Powell Library will be impacted?
The East Rotunda will also be closed. There will be restroom upgrades occuring at the same time. These will be on the Ground Floor and 2nd Floor of Powell Library. Please note that areas located near these spaces may be impacted by construction noise.
Where else in the library can I study?
In Powell Library, visitors will continue to have access to study areas and services located on all floors. Some may be impacted more than others by construction noise and activity. UCLA Library encourages visitors to explore services and study spaces offered at seven other Library locations. See the Library website for specific hours and services.
Will there still be events in Powell Library?
It’s possible there may be small events, but at this point, our priority is to support access to materials typically found in the Reading Room and to do everything possible to minimize the impact of the construction on Library visitors.
When will the seismic improvements be completed?
The project began in November 2022 and is expected to take 14-16 months to complete. UCLA Library will publish periodic construction updates on the website and across Library social media accounts.
