OpenRefine: Get data and clean it!

Wednesday, Feb 20, 2019 - 11:30am to 1:30pm

Many libraries, archives and museums are not just putting their data online, they are making it openly accessible. This workshop will demonstrate how OpenRefine empowers users to take advantage of APIs (Application Programming Interface) allowing researchers access to this directly! But wait, there's more! You will also learn to format and clean that data so it is more useful - saving you even more time.

OpenRefine lis a powerful took for exploring and cleaning data - from tabular data in spreadsheets and CSV files to more hierarchical formats like XML or JSON. Participants will learn the basics of using OpenRefine to explore their data using facets and filtering and how to easily clean large datasets using OpenRefine's Regular Expressions Language (GREL).

The instructors are a dynamic duo: Ashley Bandy (grad student from Information Studies) teams up with Claudia Horning, UCLA Library Director of Metadata Services.
