Kashkul: The Social Art of Preservation in Iraq

Tuesday, Mar 13, 2018 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Kashkul, a research and arts collaborative in Sulaimani, Iraq, is a partner with the UCLA Library's International Digital Ephemera Project. Its ongoing projects include Mosul Lives, Crux, Arrival, Kashkulistan, Handmade, and an Arts Archive (film, music, and painting). These projects cover topics such as oral history and urban reconstruction, the cultural roots of violence and devotion, and literary and other translations in Arabic and Kurdish. Elizabeth Campbell and Alana Marie Levinson-LaBrosse will discuss their collaborative and cross-cultural approach to research and preservation in areas of conflict.
