Joint UC Carpentries Workshop Series - Version Control with Git

Monday, Sep 12, 2022 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

The 6-Day UC-Joint Carpentries workshop series aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This is a hands-on workshop that will cover basic concepts and tools, including foundational R and Python coding, data management skills, and project version control with Git. The workshops series is designed for novices and you do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. This is a free workshop.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

This workshop series is for University of California faculty, graduate students, post-docs, researchers, and other staff.

Version control is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what professionals use to keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate with other people. Every large software development project relies on it, and most programmers use it for their small jobs as well. And it isn’t just for software: books, papers, small data sets, and anything that changes over time or needs to be shared can and should be stored in a version control system. This workshop will teach the basics of version control using Git commands.

(PREREQ: Basic Unix Shell command knowledge is required to use Git for this workshop. Please register for the Unix Shell workshop to learn basic shell commands used in this workshop.)
