Joint UC Carpentries Workshop Series - Introduction to R

Tuesday, Sep 6, 2022 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

The 6-Day UC-Joint Carpentries workshop series aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This is a hands-on workshop that will cover basic concepts and tools, including foundational R and Python coding, data management skills, and project version control with Git. The workshops series is designed for novices and you do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. This is a free workshop.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

This workshop series is for University of California faculty, graduate students, post-docs, researchers, and other staff.

The goal of this workshop is to teach novice programmers to write modular code and best practices for using R for data analysis using RStudio. R is commonly used in many scientific disciplines for statistical analysis and its array of third-party packages. We find that many scientists who come to Software Carpentry workshops use R and want to learn more. The emphasis of these materials is to give attendees a strong foundation in the fundamentals of R, and to teach best practices for scientific computing: breaking down analyses into modular units, task automation, and encapsulation.

This is a 3 part curriculum please register for Days 1-3 (9/06 - 9/08).

The R sessions are concurrent with the Python sessions - please only choose one Day 1-3 session series.*

Note: This workshop is for novices and will focus on teaching the fundamentals of the programming language R, and will not teach statistical analysis.
