Joint UC Carpentries Workshop Series - Intro to Openrefine

Tuesday, Sep 13, 2022 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

The 6-Day UC-Joint Carpentries workshop series aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This is a hands-on workshop that will cover basic concepts and tools, including foundational R and Python coding, data management skills, and project version control with Git. The workshops series is designed for novices and you do not need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. This is a free workshop.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

This workshop series is for University of California faculty, graduate students, post-docs, researchers, and other staff.

OpenRefine is a powerful free and open source tool for working with messy data: cleaning it and transforming it from one format into another.

This lesson will teach you to use OpenRefine to clean and format data effectively and automatically track any changes that you make. Many people comment that this tool saves them literally months of work trying to make these edits by hand.

The OpenRefine session is concurrent with the SQL session - please only choose one Day 6 session.
