Bread and Salt: Jewish Cookbooks in UCLA Library Collections

The citywide cultural initiative “Bread and Salt: The Art of Jewish Food” explores connections between Jews and food.  The UCLA Library joins this celebration through a sampling of cookbooks by Jewish authors from the circulating and special collections.
As Jews have traveled throughout the world, they have both adapted old recipes to fit local ingredients and the latest food trends and invented kosher versions of local cuisine. The contents are organized mainly by region, with sections also featuring vegetarian/vegan titles and historical cookbooks.
The exhibit, which is on view in the Lobby Gallery, was organized by a team of librarians, staff, and students from the UCLA Library and the UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies.
In conjunction with the exhibit, a cooking contest will be held on Tuesday, February 13. Winners receive a professional cooking lesson and an apron. Learn more and sign up online.
