The Jacqueline and Eugen Weber Collection Endowment in European History

Eugen Weber, a professor of history and former dean of the UCLA College of Letters and Sciences, left a legacy as a distinguished administrator, a brilliant teacher, a renowned American scholar of modern France, and a beloved patron of the UCLA Library. In London, Professor Weber met Jacqueline Brument, an art history student visiting from Paris, and they were married in 1950. They joined the UCLA community in 1956 where, as department chair and dean of social sciences, Professor Weber helped to build the history department into one of the nation’s best. Though his ideas and interests ranged across all aspects of European history, his true loves were the culture and politics of France. The Webers’ fifty-seven-year marriage was filled with books, travel, art, good food, good wine, and many devoted friends. Ms. Weber maintained her close ties to UCLA through her affiliation with the emeriti program in the Faculty Center and with the Library. She established the Jacqueline and Eugen Weber Collection Endowment in European History under the direction of the university librarian through her estate plan; it will be used to support the acquisition, preservation, and processing of library materials in European history.
