New NIH Requirements for Data Management and Sharing

By ZHUYING GONG on Tue, 2022-12-06 10:10

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy that applies to proposals submitted on or after January 25, 2023. This policy aligns with recent White House policy guidance for federally funded research requiring more transparent data sharing and promoting good data management practices. The NIH DMS Policy requires all data-generating research that is funded in whole or in part by the NIH to include a written plan to manage and share that data.

Resources to support the UCLA research community with these new requirements can be found at the Complying with NIH Data Management and Sharing Requirements website. Using the navigation bar on the site, researchers can find critical information regarding the policy, how to prepare, links to official NIH documentation, FAQs, and UCLA-produced webinars related to this new policy.

The NIH continues to release new supplemental information to support areas of compliance and privacy. Please make sure to check back to this site regularly for updated information.

The UCLA Library also continues its support of researchers. Visit the guide covering Data Management in the Sciences. By clicking on the menu, researchers can find detailed information on all aspects of data management planning from data organization, to data backup and security, to data sharing.

For assistance with writing data management and sharing plans or preparing your research for required sharing, contact the UCLA Library Data Science Center (DSC).
