ALLIE WHALEN
Allie Whalen is the Senior Audiovisual Preservation Specialist. She manages projects to preserve moving image and sound collections through digitization, conservation, and assessments, and partners with UCLA Library’s International Digital Ephemera initiative and the UCLA Punk Archive. She has a master’s degree in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation from New York University and is a 2021 recipient of a Fulbright scholarship in Uruguay.
CONSUELA (CHELA) METZGER
Consuela (Chela) Metzger is the Head of the UCLA Library Preservation & Conservation department. She is a librarian, bookbinder, conservator, and occasional educator. She is dedicated to the civic, democratic, and aesthetic possibilities of libraries and archives, and loves the City of Angels.
DEVIN MATTLIN
Devin Mattlin is the Assistant Collections Conservator. Devin mainly works with paper based collections, such as the conservation of historic maps in the Bruman collection and the rehousing of rolled architectural materials. And she occasionally enjoys helping treat items going on loan or for digitization. She is also on the Library Social Media Content Team and creates posts on the behalf of the department.
LEO GONZALEZ
Leo Gonzalez began work at the UCLA Library as a student assistant in 1993 for the Biomedical Library's Bindery Preparation Division. A few months after graduation in 1994, he joined the Biomedical Library full-time as a Library Assistant with the Acquisitions Division. After working through department mergers in Sciences Acquisitions then Print Acquisitions, his Bindery duties in Acquisitions brought him over to the Preservation and Conservation Department in 2009. Now as a Collections Care Specialist, his duties include supervising of Sciences serial binding, monograph rebinding and binding, and monitoring of environmental conditions within UCLA Library spaces.
PAT CRAMER
Pat Cramer is a Collections Care Specialist who helps manage bindery prep for serial publications in the Arts and Humanities. She joined the department in October 2009. Previously, Pat was part of the Library Print Acquisitions team.
WIL LIN
Wil Lin began his career at the UCLA Library as a Library Assistant at the Young Research Library in 1993. He joined the UCLA Library Preservation and Conservation Department at its inception in 2004 as its first Conservation Technician, and he has been the Collections Conservator since 2015.
YASMIN DESSEM
Yasmin Dessem has been the Head of Audiovisual Preservation since 2014. She is the technical lead for the preservation and digitization of the library’s moving image and sound collections. Since 2016, as part of UCLA Library’s International Digital Ephemera initiative, she has partnered with heritage institutions in Cuba and South Africa to provide digitization training.
