UCLA Collections in Library & Information Science

Collection description

The UCLA library collections in Library & Information Sciences are located primarily on the fifth floor of the Charles E. Young Research Library, in the "Z" classification. The YRL Reference Department houses the most current versions of most major bibliographic resources, such as indexes and national bibliographies. Complementing materials in YRL, related materials are found in other campus libraries. For example, the Science and Engineering Libraries contain materials on the technological aspects of library and information systems management, artificial intelligence, data and database management, and library applications of information storage, retrieval and display; Collections on topics such as the electronic publishing industry, and library administration and management are found in the Management Library. Additional, specialized materials are located in appropriate campus libraries.

The UCLA collections support teaching and research programs in the Department of Library and Information Science of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies through the PhD level. Subjects covered include: historical and contemporary librarianship; information policy; descriptive and subject cataloging; classification; abstracting and indexing; access services and user interface studies; library automation and information systems; preservation and conservation; publishing and the book trade; printing history; collection development and management; archives; international and comparative librarianship; library services for special groups; library education; communications studies; and subject-specific information resources. The collection also supports in part the interdepartmental program in Communication Studies.

UCLA collects materials in all formats and languages, although English is the primary language.
