Resources for Users with Disabilities

Printable handout in Acrobat (PDF) format

The UCLA Library is committed to providing accessibility to library materials, programs, and services to all users.

All staff working in public service areas of the campus libraries will make every effort to accommodate reasonable requests from users with disabilities. If your disability is invisible, please identify yourself as having a disability when you seek assistance.

If your needs are not met by the policies and procedures described in this handout, please notify the Library. We will examine and, if necessary, extend our policies and procedures to appropriately accommodate your needs.

Locating Materials

Staff will make every effort to assist you in obtaining information from any equipment or resource that is inaccessible to you. One specialized public workstation in each of the Biomedical, College, and Research libraries is equipped with JAWS (Job Access with Speech), which uses an integrated voice synthesizer to output the content of the computer screen to headphones, and Zoom Text, which allows screen magnification to a variety of sizes. These and some other standard workstations in a variety of locations are installed on adjustable tables to accommodate wheelchairs.

ORION Express

Students, faculty, and staff with disabilities may wish to use ORION Express for retrieval and photocopying of materials. Please ask a staff member or visit the ORION Express Web Page for further information.

ORION Express is not available to the general community, but the following libraries currently provide document delivery to non-UCLA users: the Biomedical Library (310/825-4055), Law Library (310/825-9317), Management Library (310/825-3138), Research Library (310/825-1263), Science and Engineering Library (310/825-3646), and Southern Regional Library Facility (310/206-2011). Prices vary. If you need research assistance, contact one of these libraries for details.

Retrieving Materials

If you find that library stacks or other areas are inaccessible to you, please ask staff for assistance. The number of items retrieved per day may be limited in a campus library due to staffing or workload considerations. When immediate paging cannot be done, particularly during evenings and on weekends, staff may make arrangements with you to have the material ready the next working day.

Special carts are available in the Biomedical, Music, Research, and Science and Engineering libraries, which are designed to assist you in retrieving and transporting materials in the stacks and other parts of the library. Please ask for a cart at the circulation desks in these libraries.

Proxy Borrower Card

You may designate, at no additional charge, an individual to borrow books in your name. That individual will be issued a "proxy borrower card." Please ask at the circulation desk of any campus library for further information.

Photocopying Materials

If you are unable to use a photocopier, staff will make copies for you. Bring materials to be copied to a circulation desk along with a debit card that has sufficient value to make the copies. Cash cannot be accepted. When fulltime staff are not available to leave the desk, you may leave material at a circulation desk for copying and pick up your copies the next working day. All copying must be in compliance with U.S. copyright law.

Renewals

To renew items, you may use the telephone renewal service at 310/825-9188 or renew materials yourself on ORION2, the Library’s Web-based catalog. For further information and instructions on how to use Library self-services, consult the Library Reneweals Web page.

These rights include equal access to employment, public services, public accommodations provided by private entities, transportation, and telecommunications.
