The UCLA Library and the Graduate Writing Center both offer graduate students helpful workshops on a variety of research- and writing-related topics. The Library workshops are open; no RSVP is required. The Graduate Writing Center's workshop schedule is available online.

Research Commons Open House

Friday, January 27, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
If you’ve been wondering how to use the collaborative pods equipped with big-screen monitors and other features of this expansive new space, bring your laptop, iPad, or just yourself to get advice and assistance. Staff will offer demos of collaborative apps including Prezi, Google Docs, EndNote Web, PBWiki, and more, and information will be available about reserving pods, group study rooms, and the classroom as well as other facilities, equipment, and services.

XML (Extensible Markup Language

Wednesday, February 1, 11 a.m.
This ninety-minute session presents a short introduction to XML and how and why to use it for innovative digital scholarship projects. Knowing XML will increase your ability to plan projects, talk to technology experts, and share content with collaborators anywhere. By the end of the session you will know how to read and edit XML and understand the relationships among XML, XSLT, and HTML. There will be some hands-on exercises and an introduction to Oxygen, an XML editor.

TEI (Text Encoding Initiative)

Friday, February 10, 2 p.m.
This ninety-minute session gives a quick introduction to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) standard, which is used by humanities scholars and librarians to create digital editions of documents, books, manuscripts, etc. Learn to use the TEI standard during this hands-on workshop.

Copyright Basics

Thursday, February 16, 2 p.m.
This hour-long session covers what every beginner needs to know about copyright: what is covered under copyright, what is not, the bundle of exclusive rights, duration of copyright, works in the public domain, and more.
