Welcome to SEL (video)

SEL - Library As A Place (video) 2003-2004, 2006-2007

SEL is comprised of a main site housing the Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Astronomy, and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences collections, most public services staff, three divisions (administration, collection development, and public services) and Sciences Acquisitions. Two other collections (SEL/Chemistry and SEL/Geology-Geophysics) are housed in separate buildings. A fourth collection, SEL/Physics in Kinsey Hall, was closed in December 2003. The materials were transferred primarily to the SEL/Chemistry Collection, SRLF or other SEL collections. Until July 2003, SEL also included three divisions (cataloging, acquisitions, and interlibrary loan) that have since been incorporated into other departments. The SEL collections include over 576,000 volumes, over 5,400 serials currently received, and over 4 million technical reports. Staffing includes 5 FTE librarians, 5.5 FTE staff personnel, and 10 FTE student employees.

SEL librarians can provide classroom demonstrations of online resources including journal article databases, electronic journals and reference sources, UCLA Library Catalog and other library catalogs. Course related instruction is available upon request of faculty members. Please contact an SEL subject librarian to discuss course related library assignments

SEL/Chemistry (pdf)
4238 Young Hall
(310) 825-3342
The SEL/Chemistry Collection supports primarily the research and instructional interests of the departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics and Astronomy, and the Molecular Biology Institute. Some astrophysics materials may also be found in SEL/Geology-Geophysics. Astronomy materials are housed in SEL/EMS. Special holdings include departmental theses; spectra sheets; the Morgan Memorial Collection, a special collection of materials on the history of chemistry; and U.S. Chemical Patents (1952-1996) in microform.

SEL/Engineering & Mathematical Sciences Collection (SEL/EMS) (pdf)
8270 Boelter Hall
(310) 825-4951
The SEL/Engineering & Mathematical Sciences Collection collects and maintains a research level collection to meet the information needs of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) and the departments of Physics and Astronomy, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Mathematics, and Statistics. SEL/EMS is among the top five academic engineering libraries in the United States. Reference service is provided weekdays by Science & Engineering Library staff members. For reference questions click here. For UCLA students, faculty, and staff, many article databases are available via web access. Searches of these article databases offer rapid access to full-text via UC e-Links.

SEL/Geology-Geophysics Collection (pdf)
4697 Geology Bldg.
(310) 825-1055
The SEL/Geology-Geophysics Collection is strong in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, space physics, planetary science and regional geology. All publications of the U.S. Geological Survey, publications of all state geological surveys, and many international geological surveys are collected. Special emphasis is placed on geologic guidebooks for all western states, and publications from countries around the Pacific Rim, China, the Himalayas, Latin America, Australia, Russia and Europe. The adjoining William C. Putnam Map Collection holds 90,000 topographic and geologic maps and is a depository for USGS geologic map series and topographic maps for California, Nevada, and Arizona.
