The Science and Engineering Library (SEL) comprises two locations: SEL/Boelter (main location) in 8270 Boelter Hall and SEL/Geology in 4697 Geology Building. The SEL collections include more than a half a million print volumes, subscriptions to nearly 5,400 print or electronic journals, over 55,000 e-books, and a large collection of online technical reports. The library also provides access to online databases covering each physical science and engineering discipline. Staffing includes three FTE librarians, four FTE staff personnel, and seven FTE student employees.
Librarians provide course-related instruction on using electronic and print resources, including journal article databases, the UCLA Library Catalog, web search engines; research impact metrics; research data management and curation; scholarly communication, copyright, and open access publishing. Course-related instruction is available upon the request of faculty members. Please contact an SEL subject librarian to discuss course-related library assignments.
8270 Boelter Hall; 310.825.4951
SEL/Boelter collects and maintains a research-level collection to meet the information needs of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) and the departments of physics and astronomy, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, mathematics, computer science, and statistics. SEL/Boelter is the main location for the UCLA engineering and physical sciences community and is the location of two collaborative group spaces (SEL Research Commons and SEL Learning Commons), a group study room, course reserves, circulating stacks, and laptop lending.
4697 Geology Building; 310.825.1055
SEL/Geology consists of SEL's geology collections and hosts a quiet reading room, circulating stacks, and laptop lending. There are also two group study rooms available for two or more students. These rooms can be reserved online or in person at the SEL/Geology circulation desk; a valid BruinCard is required. SEL/Geology specializes in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, space physics, planetary science, seismology, and regional geology. All publications of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), publications of western U.S. state geological surveys, and many international geological surveys are collected. The adjoining William C. Putnam Map Collection holds ninety thousand topographic and geologic maps and is a depository for USGS geologic map series and topographic maps for California, Nevada, and Arizona. Contact an SEL Librarian for assistance in using the map room.
