Letter from University Librarian, Ginny Steel- Fall 2017

Dear Donors and Supporters of the UCLA Library,

Can it be fall already? The summer has just flown by! It seems like only days ago that we were honoring undergraduates for their research projects and congratulating our graduates.

In fact, not long after graduation we received some wonderful news. Donors like you contributed more than $5.5 million to the UCLA Library during the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Your extraordinary generosity has a significant impact on every aspect of the UCLA Library, and more importantly, on every undergraduate, graduate, and professional school student on campus. Donor funds help us keep our 24-hour study space, Night Powell, open throughout the quarter; acquire new resources for our faculty and researchers; and give students the opportunity to work directly with archives in Special Collections. Your gifts also help us to enhance library spaces and technology that support individual and collaborative research.

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve added to my senior management team with the appointment of Alison M. Scott as our new associate university librarian for collection management and scholarly communication. Alison will guide our services that help faculty manage their copyrights, make their published research broadly available to the public, and leverage Library collections to lower students’ costs for course materials. In addition, she will manage our preservation program, direct staff who acquire and catalog our ever-growing print and electronic collections, and supervise the Southern Regional Library Facility.

As I write this, the start of the school year is only days away, promising to bring a whirlwind of activity throughout the libraries. I look forward to being invigorated and inspired anew by UCLA’s exceptional students, extraordinary faculty, and exemplary staff. And I especially look forward to thanking you in person during your next visit for your unstinting, ongoing support of the UCLA Library.
