Guides (or guides to the literature as they're sometimes
called) provide a basic introduction to the literature of a topic. Guides
often list important bibliographies, dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias,
periodical indexes, manuscript and statistical finding aids, etc. They
can be a useful first step in beginning research.
