UCLA Academic Departments and Units
The Linguistics Collection in the Young Research Library
The Linguistics collections at UCLA support undergraduate, graduate,
teaching and research in a number of campus academic programs. The
Department of Linguistics is the primary department supported by
collections in general linguistics (theoretical linguistics,
universal grammar, and historical linguistics), African languages,
and indigenous languages of the Americas. Other campus units
supported by the collection include all language departments; the
Sociology, Anthropology, and Applied Linguistics and TESL
Departments; interdepartmental programs in Indo-European Studies and
Romance Linguistics and Literature; and the Phonetics and
Psycholinguistics laboratories.
Major fields and subdisciplines found in the collection are the
following: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics,
typology, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics
(language acquisition and processing), computational linguistics,
natural language processing, linguistic anthropology, semiotics,
discourse analysis and speech act theory, Creole and Pidgin studies,
properties of grammars, historical linguistics, Indo-European
studies, and general linguistic theory.
Descriptive grammars, dictionaries, and instructional materials on
particular languages (e.g., Russian) are in their specific library
collections (e.g., Slavic languages).
The Young Research Library houses the majority of materials in
general linguistics (primarily in the "P" classification, 4th floor),
with additional materials collected by other campus libraries:
College Library (undergraduate level), Science and Engineering
Library (computational linguistics, artificial intelligence),
Biomedical Library (neurolinguistics), Maps and Government
Information (linguistic atlases). The Reference collections in
campus libraries contain dictionaries and bibliographic aids in
general and applied linguistics.
Materials are collected in all formats and languages, with equal
emphasis on monographic and periodical literature. The library
subscribes to most major serial publications, including a large
number of monographic series.
