This index is chiefly compiled from the
Additional dissertations can be found: Byzantine Studies: 'Byzantine Dissertations in North America' Canada (Ph.D. Theses completed since 1992 at the University of Toronto): ' France (Liste des thèses nouveau régime en cours en histoire ancienne en France [1998]): '' Great Britain and Ireland: 'Directory of PhD and DPhil Theses in Progress in Classics and related subjects in the UK and Ireland', Sweden: 'Disputationer under åren 1990 till 1998'. Sweden: 'Pågående avhandlingar/Postgatduate Students' (in progress).
In the hope of rendering the index more useful, theses and dissertations are at times listed under more than one heading.
An asterisk preceding an entry means that the thesis or dissertation is reported to have been completed. Not a few, especially from Great Britain, have also doubtlessly been finished.
In preparing this index the compiler has occasionally been compelled to conjecture the subject-matter of the thesis or dissertation.
The table of contents will, it is hoped, permit the reader at any rate to discover desired sections with ease; that some of the sections are complexly organised may be seen from two detailed analysis provided (art; literature, Greek). In Netscape, and perhaps elsewhere, searches of individual names, words and phrases may be accomplished by using the Find command in Edit (control + f). In performing a search, the user will bear in mind that different systems of spelling are in use (e.g., "Asclepius", "Asklepios"; "Oxyrhunchus", "Oxyrhynchus"; "Vergil", "Virgil").
Unfortunately, neither completeness nor accuracy can be guaranteed.
