QAYENI COLLECTION


"Qayeni collection" (in immaculate condition); coll. 1053: manuscripts (Arabic, Persian, Turkish: 2) by, or from the possessions of, the scholar, Sayyid Abu Talib b. Abi Turab al-Husayni al-Khurasani al-Qayeni (1230/1818 - 1293/1876*), only three of his works have hitherto been edited (out-of-print lithographs): "Lu'lu' al-ghaliyah, "Salat al-musafir", and "Durrah al-bahirah", Mashad 1318/1900 (s. Mushar I, 182 f.)

"Ta'liqat 'ala hawashi sharh al'Azadi bi-mukhtasir al-Hajibi" (three parts), Arabic, valuable in terms of calligraphy (exquisite Nasta'liq), lavish marginalia in finest miniscule script; notes and seal (p.1) by Muhammad b. Razi al-Din al-Harawi. - Very fine brown leather binding w. ornamental border and six decorative medallions. -

"Kitab-i muhit-i bahr-i haqa'iq" (anthology, in 13 parts, of the Shaikhs Ahari, Abhari, Bakri, Baghdadi, Basri, 'Ajami, Dinwari, Ta'i, Ma'ruf al-Karkhi, Sjad, Saqti, Suhrawardi, et al.): Persian, fine Nasta'liq w. red titles. - W. 17 tables and drawings in two and three colors. - Brown leather binding. -

Contents: 13 of the originally 14 parts are preserved: on prayer, sunna, the names of Allah, the nature of angels, talismans, numeric and and alphabetic mysticism, seclusion, resurrection, the 12th Imam, astrology, archery, wrestling, swordsmanship and horsemanship. - Various parts are written in chiffre (abjad). -

370 pages of text; 19 l/p, 230x155 (180x95) mm; dated (in accordance with lost original ?): Rabi' II, 853 / 1449. - Probably valuable rarity. -


14. Collection: "Kitab-i usturlab" (Book of the astrolabe), three treatises on astronomy by famous authors; Persian:

341 pages of text; 17 l/p; 215x170 (160x90) mm; w. 50 two-colored drawings and tables. Copy prepared by the calligrapher, Damghani in 1237-38 / 1822-23 (pp.47, 134, 341).- Black leather binding. - Most probably unresearched. -


15. Sayyid Abu 'Abdullah Husain b. Ahmad Zawzani:

"Kitab al-masadir" (Linguistics, Arabic and Persian), fine Naskh w. ornamental titles and red sentence dividers. - Title page bears 7 lines of notes signed by Husain b. 'Ali al-Hilli, dated 1111 / 1699, according to which the Ms. is declared a religious endowment (waqf) by Malik Husain al- Qayeni (signatures and seals of witnesses are also present). - Burgundy leather binding. -

144 pages of text; 14 l/p; 190x125 (140x80) mm. Calligrapher (a famous master): Dust Muhammad (p. 144; cf. Bayani I, pp.187 ff., no.316: mentions merely one Ms. from the University Library in Istanbul). Dated: Jumadi I, 1104 / 1692. -


16. Muhammad b. Ya'qub al-Kulaini:

"Kitab al-rawzah"; Arabic, fine & clear script w. red titles and numerous marginalia. Dark brown leather binding. -

17. Muhammad 'Ali b. Muhammad Baqir Isfahani:

"Risalah-yi dar bayan-i adab-i hajj" (Treatise on pilgrimage practices), Persian, Naskh. Brown leather binding w. six ornamental medallions (narrow binding(?)).

82 pages of text; 18 l/p; 170x70 (135x50) mm. - Calligrapher: Muhammad Taqiy b. Muhammad Sharif. - Dated: Jumadi I, 1203 / 1788. -


18. Mir-Khwand (died 903 / 1498):

"Kitab rawzat al-safa" (First volume of the famous universal history: prophets and rulers of the pre-islamic world); Persian, exquisite Nasta'liq by an anonymous master calligrapher. Text boxes in gold, red, and blue; fine introductory ornaments (sar-luh) w. floral designs in gold and colors.- Heavy brown leather binding. - (Spine and binding somewhat damaged). -

387 pages of text; 31 l/p; 365x225 (285x170) mm. Dated (p.387): 912 / 1506 (only eight or nine years after Mir-Khwand's death). - Rarity: one of the earliest Mir-Khwand manuscripts, at any rate.

20. Husain b. Mu'in al-Din al-Maibudi (philosopher, executed as a "Sunni fanatic" under Shah Isma'il 907-30 / 1501-24):

"Sharh al-hidayah" (famous commentary on Athir al-Din al-Abhari, cf. Browne IV, p.57: "Maybodi's commentary . . . is still the favourite text-book for beginners in philosophy . . ."); Arabic, fine very even Naskh. Marginalia partially damaged (main text is immaculate). - Brown leather binding (spine and binding somewhat damaged). -

222 pages of text; 15 l/p; 190x105 (115x55) mm. Final dating (p.222): Shawwal 880 / 1475 (!!): "faraqtu min ta'lifihi . . ." without mention of a katib: copied directly from the original? -


21. Shaikh Baha'i (Baha' al-Din Muhammad al-Amili, universal scholar and wazir of Shah 'Abbas the Great, died 1030 / 1621):

"Sharh suwar al-Qur'an" (Coranic commentaries); Arabic; varying, always well legible script w. red titles. Main body of text pp.29-318. Beginning, end, margins and pasted-in notes w. a wide variety of marginalia. - Semi-leather binding w. painted ornaments in orange and blue. -

23. 'Abd al-Karim al-Burujirdi:

"Risalah dar bari-yi sighah" (Treatise on Shi'ite temporary marriage), Persian, even, easily legible Naskh. - Green leather binding. -

24. Collection of two treatises on astronomy: (Persian)

25. 'Ali Qushci (great astronomer and mathematician of the second half of the 15th century; highly esteemed by Sultan Uzun Hasan (1453-1478): s. Browne III, p. 407):

"Risalah-yi farsi dar hay'at" (Persian treatise on astronomy); one of the rare scientific works in Persian antedating 1500. Pp.95-144 original (15th/16th century Nasta'liq), beginning (pp.1-94) replaced (18th century Naskh). - Ms. was owned by Mirza Dawud b. Mir Muhammad Ja'far al- Husaini al-Mashhadi in Rabi' II, 108 1793 (s. notes and seals pp.1, 144). - Preface, two main sections (maqala), conclusion. - Lavish comments in margins. - Dark leather binding. -

28. Shaikh Nur al-Din 'Ali ("al-muhaqqiq al-thani", the second redactor, Shaikh al-Islam at the court of the Safawid, Shah Tamasp; died 940 / 1533):

"Hashiyah 'ala alfiyah al-shahid" (Commentary on the famous Shahid-Alfiyah); Arabic; large, easily legible Naskh w. red titles on thick waxed paper. Completely preserved. - Fine green leather binding w. six ornamental medallions (blemished). -

29. Yusuf Mulla Sa'di (as yet unknown author of the second half of the 18th century):

Collection (Title: "Kitab manhaj al-tullab"; 'The path of scholars') of three works (Arabic):

Very even, easily legible, vocalized Naskh w. red titles. Countless marginalia in the margins, between the lines, and pasted-in. - According to the preface (p.2), the author was influenced by Imam Shafi'i and Zakariya al-Nawawi. - Black leather binding w. ornaments. -

274 pages of text; 17 l/p (main bodies of text); 220x170 mm. - Dated (pp.118, 149, 200, 274): 1181 / 1767. - Autograph. - Unedited.


30. 'Abd al-Rahim b. Muhammad Mahdi (scribe; partial author ?):

"Asrar al-'arifin" (Secrets of the knowing; anthology of mystic Shi'ite prose and poetry); Persian and Arabic. - Masterful calligraphic Naskh (black, red) w. 13 two-colored title borders. - Contents: Preface (beginning is missing), 19 main chapters (majalis), conclusion. - Very nice brown leather binding w. six ornamental medallions displaying flowers and birds. -

"Nijat al-'ibad fi yawm al-mi'ad" (parts I-IV; Persian translation by Isfahani's student, Sayyid Abu Talib Hamadani); beautiful, large Naskh w. red titles. - Brown leather binding. -

259 pages of text; 19 l/p; 220x155 (150x85) mm. - A 1293 / 1876 lithograph from Tehran is itself considered to be a rarity. Ms. possibly translator's autograph. -
