UCLA Library Iberian Studies Collection

The Iberian studies collection at UCLA is particularly outstanding in the areas of Hispanic literature and Portuguese civilization. Subject strengths are primarily in literature, philology and linguistics, history, the history of the book, and exploration. The Library acquires materials in all subject areas and in all formats, including books, journals, digital resources, microforms, manuscripts, audiovisual materials, and ephemera.

Systematic collection-building of Hispanic literature began at UCLA as early as the 1930's. Through the Farmington Plan, strengths in Portuguese language and literature and in Spanish language were developed in the late 1940s and 1950s. Funding from the Gulbenkian and Del Amo Foundations and the acquisition of several sizable and important collections, such as the libraries of Joseph Benolial, the Duke of Palmella, and Professor César Barja, added to these early collecting areas and formed a significant research collection. Outstanding interdisciplinary holdings on Latin America and Lusophone Africa complement the Iberian resources.
