Introduction

This index is chiefly compiled from the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies 39, 1994, pp. 185-230 and 41, 1996, pp. 151-92 (the latter's year, noted in the body of this text), and the American Philological Association Newsletter 17.4, Aug. 1994, p. 22; 18.4, Aug. 1995, pp. 8-12; 19.3, June 1996, pp. 14-21 (corrections, 19.4, Aug. 1996, p. 6); 20.3, June 1997 [the last's date, noted in the body of this text]; 21.4, August 1998, pp. 12-19.

In the hope of rendering the index the more useful, theses and dissertations at times are listed under more than one heading.

An asterisk preceding an entry means that the thesis or dissertation is reported to have been completed.

In preparing this index the compiler has occasionally been compelled to conjecture the subject-matter of the thesis or dissertation.

The table of contents will, it is hoped, permit the reader at any rate to discover desired sections with ease; that some of the sections are complexly organised may be seen from two detailed analysis provided (art; literature, Greek).

Unfortunately, neither completeness nor accuracy can be guaranteed.
