ROUSE MS 69
PONTIFICAL (FRAGMENT). FRANCE, S. XVI 2/4

Detail of illuminated initial from MS 69

A fragment of 13 detached leaves from a handsome small pontifical (the offices performed by a bishop), written and illuminated in France in the second quarter of the sixteenth century.

Double opening of MS 69

The script has been heavily influenced by Roman type, and the decoration by classical motifs. The initials have become carved Roman square capitals, alternating in white and gold on alternating gold and blue grounds decorated with berries, flowers, and leaves. From the library of Myles Standish Slocum.
