Medieval Manuscripts from the Collection of Richard and Mary Rouse
ROUSE ILLUM 12
PRINTED MISSAL (LEAF). STRASBOURG, 1499

Detail of "Vernicle" in the lower margin of Illum. 12

One leaf from a Missal printed on parchment in Strasbourg in 1499, with the “Vernicle” or face of Christ from Veronica’s veil painted in the lower margin. Within a frame parted pink and green, supported by two floral sprays in green, pink, and gold, the bearded face of Christ with crown of thorns on a stippled gold ground. Contemporary German work, illustrative of the early printed book as a significant repository of late medieval painting.
