Medieval Manuscripts from the Collection of Richard and Mary Rouse
ROUSE MS 51
ABUBECAR, LIBER SECRETORUM (1 QUIRE). ENGLAND, S. XIII 2/4
One quire from an English manuscript of the second quarter of the thirteenth century
containing Abubecar, Liber secretorum. It is one of five surviving manuscripts of this alchemical treatise, which only appears in the early years of the thirteenth century. The quire was part of a large manuscript of alchemical texts, which was broken up before 1650 and from which other portions survive at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington D. C. It is a witness to the interest of twelfth- and thirteenth-century English scholars in Muslim astronomical and alchemical texts. Still largely unstudied, this work and its author remain to be edited and identified.
